Final Concept (Updated)

Updated: Jun 11, 2020

The original intent for this project work flow was to create concept art pieces for each of the listed ideas in the concept posts, this was to help me pick an idea to work with and to help me get creative. After the First concept I did (the "Alien abduction"), I had a new idea for a concept that I really liked, so I decided to turn it into a piece of art to solidify the idea for me, as I was not a massive fan of the previous ideas I had had.

The Idea

I would first like to mention that this concept takes heavy inspiration from the Gears of War series created by epic games.

The story is set in the close future, a well functioning civilised world is one day hit with a world wide disaster [Name given to the day e.g D day]. Foreseen by no one, a threat from beneath the ground awakens and invades the surface level of the planet. Millions of these beetles have burrowed their way to the surface, destroying buildings and dragging the people of earth below to feed on.

The world is a destroyed wasteland, the ones who weren't taken beneath the surface were forced to fight back. Our Hero is part of an extermination team, tasked with destroying the creatures from below. exterminating their hives both above and underground. After losing everything he had (our lover archetype or house/business/family home) to the creatures, our hero is fuelled by the hope of getting it all back.

We follow our Hero on his journey, as he is guided by his team which consists of fellow exterminators(sidekick archetype) and an assistant who informs him through his ear from a distant location (our Mentor/sage archetype) through strategically structured tunnels and hives. throughout his journey our hero discovers more about these creatures and their origin than was expected, such as their creation not being as natural as we thought (The shadow/ ruler / creator archetype - our characters opposition)

The plan

I'm Happy with this story as it allows me to create relatively unique ideas such as the beetles and it gives me enough context to create my characters. I will be creating concept art for the world, the character and his equipment and then using the existing concept art for the beetle I will create a 3D asset.

The reason I have chosen to make the beetle 3D is because I believe it is a unique enough that there wont be existing guides and tutorial on "how to make a beetle in a helmet using 3D software" which will pose a greater challenge, where as creating a character will have plenty of more material and guides to follow.

Once I have created the beetle I will decide based on my remaining time if creating a 3D character model is achievable.

I will be documenting this process under a blog post title [From flat to 3D]
